Try this twist on a typical children's birthday party.
Ask the guests to NOT bring a birthday gift. Instead, ask them to bring a new or gently-used book, videotape or DVD to donate to your local library or children's charity.
By doing this, you teach your own child the importance of opening your home to friends without expecting anything in return. Plus the party becomes not only a birthday celebration, but a way to create an impact on the community.
