MTV video music awards now has video game categories

At this year's MTV Video Music Awards, there will be two new categories recognizing the contributions of video game composers.

Best Video Game Score and Best Video Game Soundtrack (for games that hit up record labels for their tunes.)

And I say it's about time! Since music capabilities got better on 16-bit console systems, there has been some incredible composition used in games.

This year's nominees for score are Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter, Hitman: Blood Money, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Electroplankton.

For soundtrack, the nominees are mostly games with hip-hop tinged tracks. Fight Night Round 3, Burnout Revenge, NBA 2K6, Driver: Parallel Lines and Marc Ecko's Getting Up.

It's just too bad these categories were added so late. Where was MTV when Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy 7 and Silent Hill 3 were released? ...just name a few games with mindblowing soundtracks.

The MTV VMAs will be aired August 31.
