Provence, Colour and Fragrance

By early summer, the heady scent of lavender spreads across much of Provence but year round, the wild flowers and herbs of the sunny south of France blend their fragrance in myriad subtle ways. They add colour and flavour to the local cuisine or are used in natural cosmetics, perfumes and a wide range of beauty products.

They grow in meadows, in window boxes, in garden pots, on rocky outcrops and in the shade of the olive groves. Related to jasmine and lilac, the olive tree is at home in Provence, adding a generous crop of health giving fruit to a whole array of vitamin rich aromatic plants.

Provence has fine beaches and rugged hills, quaint villages and ancient cities but the most lasting memory is the fragrance of a sunny land and the silvery green olive trees rustling in the breeze.
