Sci-Fi Films and Why I love them!

Science fiction films are the way of the future, literally. But they have changed so much and evolved (as sci-fi should) that the definition has changed.

When you think of sci-fi films, you think of 2001, Blade Runner, Star Trek, Star Wars. All great films, wildly entertaining to watch and slickly produced. But the modern sci-fi film is different, almost to the point of nonexistence.

Try to think of recent sci-fi films. The Matrix, War of the Worlds, Star Wars prequel (garbare) and not much else. The traditional sci-fi film is so costly to produce, that they are rare. The situation comedies and romance movies draw the crowds, and if you are going to spend all the money, better make it an action film.

I am here to tell you though that the future of the sci-fi film is bright. If you are willing to categorize Anime (such as Steamboy) and many straight to DVD films within the genre, you have a wealth of entertainment out there.

When I was a boy, watching Harrison Ford on that screen in Blade Runner, I was hooked. Film makers have the chance to give us a glimpse at a world that melds both fear, and excitement, the future is always frightening, but it can be entertaining in the same breath.

Don't give up on sci-fi movies, there may not be as many out there these days, but when they do arrive, they are always the best forms of escapism and the most fun you can have at the theater.

Wtih that in mind, take a moment to check out my review of The Prestige with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, a great new sci-fi flick.

Until later, keep your eyes up.
