The Slavs are the people of Eastern Europe. No one really knows for certain where this term originated, but it is believed to have its roots in "slovo" (word) or "slava" (glory).
Interestingly, "slavophiles" were members of a historical movement that favored Eastern Slavic culture over the Western European culture that Peter the Great sought to introduce into Russia through the founding of St. Petersburg. People who are fond of Slavic culture and spend their times studying it often refer to themselves as Slavophiles today. Are you a Slavophile?
