Founding of St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is a favorite destination for travelers to Russia. It contrasts with gritty Moscow with glittering churches, sprawling palaces, and romantic vestiges of the past. However, the site on which St. Petersburg was founded was originally marshland, and the manner of its construction was hardly romantic.

As you can see by Bhumika Ghimire's article on Russian Business, Russia is still far from being "Westernized," though not as far as in Peter the Great's day. However, the US, Europe, and other countries might do well to take into consideration Russia's practices if they are going to get a share of the vast resources that Russia has to offer--through manpower, the rich environment, and sheer size.
