This month there ave been noises from both the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in the UK and the American Chemical Society (ACS) concerning funding for education. Both societies appeal to environmental issues and climate change as fundamental to this need.
Responding to the Budget statement by Chancellor Gordon Brown, Dr Richard Pike, chief executive of the RSC, affirmed that, although pleased with the amount dedicated to science education, the "extraodinary circumstances" of climate change and global competition meant that more was necessary.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed Director of Education at the ACS, Mary Kirchoff, emphasised on her appointment that with industry getting greener, it would expect to hire people who have some knowledge of Environmental Chemistry. She would like to see more money spent on Green education, especially for undergraduates.
