Oneida, Brooklyn's favorite sons of indie rock, tend to attract some weird cats.
Perhaps it's the band name, which is not only a First Nations tribe in New York, but also the name of an infamous 18th century utopian community that practiced complex marriage, male continence, and all other sorts of fun stuff that has nothing to do with music (but would make a fantastic rock ballad by some 80s hair band).
Maybe it's because the band is made up of four blokes who play under the pseudonyms of Kid Millions, Bobby Matador, Hanoi Jane and Double Rainbow.
Maybe it's because they're from Brooklyn.
Who knows? But here at Folk101, we love their loud, chaotic, creative, and utterly uncategorizable music, and last Saturday, they put on a fantastic show at Montreal's La Sala Rossa in support of their new album, Happy New Year.
During the show, Folk101 made a few new friends, including a girl with an unpronounceable Polish name who just arrived from Vancouver, the Krakow of Canada's west coast. She wore all black, sported a wild 'do, and liked to show us scars that she had recently acquired in a boat-theft incident gone wrong.
None of this would have been out of the ordinary for this type of show, except for one thing. After a few drinks, she started to regale Folk101 and our entourage (what don't you have one?) with the ins and outs of her adventures in the wild world of feminine hygiene.
Strange cats, I tell you what... Oh well, here at Folk101 we will climb any mountain and converse with whatever crazy person we find standing on the top, loopy from the lack of oxygen, if it means bringing you the latest in folk and folk-related musical accessories.
Keep your eyes peeled for the complete review later this week.
Peace.
