Welcome to Folk Music 101!

Like your mother says, it's good to have goals in life. Well, here at Folk101, we believe in always doing what mama recommends. So here's what this page hopes to accomplish.

Goals:

  1. Provide comprehensive, entertaining and educational information This means covering folk music in all its guises, including: bluegrass, country & western, roots, traditional, and basically anything acoustic.
  2. Highlight up-and-coming musicians The ghost of Woody Guthrie wouldn't let me sleep at night if I didn't try to give some much-needed exposure to those hardworking troubadours who toil away their nights in smoky bars, coffeehouses, and living rooms, keeping this music alive and helping it to evolve. So if there is someone I should know about, please let me know! And if you are a folk musician, send me your CD and maybe I'll review it on the site. Which brings me to my final goal...
  3. Get readers involved! That means you! Email me with tips, content suggestions, or simply to share your favorite Bob Dylan aphorism. Contribute to ongoing discussions or start your own, and take a moment to participate in our online polls.

Features:

I will be updating frequently...and I mean frequently! So stay awhile-I'll put the kettle on-and have a gander at our various sections:

  • Blog: Here you will find breaking news, additional information related to articles, links, opinion pieces, and generally an overarching portrait of my sparkling personality.
  • Articles: This section will feature in-depth news items, reviews, profiles of musicians and their instruments, educational asides, top-ten lists, retrospectives, and timely opinion pieces.
  • Polls: With a mere click of the mouse, you can contribute to worldwide musical culture! Check back for the results of our utterly unscientific surveys of your opinions on songs, musicians, and what cookies go best with folk music.
  • Discussions: Share your thoughts on anything you see or want to see on Folk101 in the discussion section. Your opinions, concerns, questions and suggestions are an invaluable resource in assisting this site to grow and, hopefully, improve.
  • Folk101's Weekly Newsletter: In the coming months, Suite101 will be introducing RSS technology for our readers' convenience. Until then, or if you have strong Luddite tendencies, sign up for my weekly summary of new articles, sent directly to your in-box. Click here for more information.

Thanks for reading. Please tell your friends and come back as often as possible!
