In an move calculated to expand audience appeal, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has started releasing 30-minute podcasts, available for free downloading off the orchestra's website. The monthly programs consist of musical excerpts with commentary and interviews. The PodGuide to the Orchestra examines different sections of the orchestra. The Podcast Panel elicits audience response to one of the CBSO's performances. Included with each podcast is a slide show of the orchestra that listeners are invited to view as they play the podcast.
Podcasts could be an effective way to build an orchestra's publicity. Will other ensembles follow suit?
