The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town is the true account of Ron Williamson, an Oklahoma boy who was the first pick of the Oakland Athletics in the 1971 baseball draft. Six years later, his baseball career was over, brought down by drugs, drinking, women, and possibly mental illness. He was unable to hold a job and returned to Ada, Oklahoma to live with his mother.

In 1982, a local 21-year-old waitress was raped and murdered. For five years, the police were unable to solve the crime. In 1987, Williamson and his friend Dennis Fritz were arrested and charged with capital murder. With no physical evidence, the pair was convicted -- Fritz to life imprisonment and Williamson to death row.
