Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday, observed the last Monday of May (May 29, 2006) and the weekend prior is traditionally known as Memorial Day Weekend. Memorial Day commemorates United States military that died in service for their country. It has a very interesting history.
The Southern states of the U.S. established a day to honor their Civil War soldiers. General John A. Logan thought there should also be a day set aside to honor Union (Northern) soldiers of the Civil War as well. For many years, because of lingering hostilities between North and South, the two memorial observances were celebrated separately. It was originally called "Decoration Day." After 1967, it was officially named Memorial Day. But Decoration Day didn't die-in the Southeastern U.S., the Sunday before Memorial Day; many still decorate the graves of loved ones.
In the United States, Memorial Day is traditionally celebrated by visiting cemeteries and memorials. The U.S. flag may be flown at half-staff from dawn until noon. Since it is usually a paid vacation day, families often take extended holidays or vacations. It is the unofficial start of summer for most people, while Labor Day is the unofficial end of the summer season. Beaches are open; families barbecue in the back yard; and community and military organizations such as Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) hold ceremonies, parades, and luncheons. The Indianapolis 500 is held in conjunction with Memorial Day.
Many are spending the holiday at theme parks with their families.
I thank God for the men and women of every country who risk their lives in service to all. This Memorial Day, I pause and honor those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.
