Obese Girls and College

I recently came across a study that found 50% of obese girls were less likely to go to college. Certainly not because of their lack of intelligence, motivation or interest. The reason obese girls are opting not to go to college is because they lack the self-confidence and self-esteem.

I see this as a sad reality. As a once overweight college student myself, I guess I was in the other half of the equation that wanted a better life for myself, regardless of my size. Education is important and nothing should stop young women from reaching their educational goals.

What concerns me is that if women choose to opt out of college because of the way they look, what else will they drop out of in life? What kind of life do we lead if we stay locked up at home, wishing we were skinny? That's not the kind of life I want to life. I want to lose weight and be healthier, but my life does not stop because I am overweight.

I urge overweight women to go to college and make that commitment to yourself. Going to college was empowering and it was a great time in my life. Not to mention that my weight was not an issue with people after I graduated high school. A little maturtiy goes a long way.

I'm actually really overweight. I'm 5'9 and in the higher 200's. Thing is, I'm pretty healthy when it comes to eating. I've always thought it was an undiagnosed health issue. I just moved to the city where I will be attending college two days ago, and I'm actually going for Culinary - Baking and Pastry. haha. Seems alittle paradoxical no? But the thing is, I actually feel that I'm going to be able to lose a significant amount of weight now that I'm living on my own and fending for myself. I didn't buy ANY snacks for my first foundation of food at my apt. Granted, the food I DID buy isn't healthy at all: PB&Jelly, Ramen, Mac n Cheese. But those are just simple things that can't easily go bad. Once I know my way around this town I'm sure my eating habits will improve.

But I think that all girls should go to college if they want it, and not be held back by their self esteem issues. I'm not completely unfortunate looking, but I'm defintely not a "looker" . And I do have a few self esteem issues. Maybe I'm just on the other side of that 50% , who knows?
