A study done at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University found that everyone experiences cravings. The findings showed that even dieters have frequent cravings.
Researchers claim that this information can help dieters control their weight because participants in the study who lost the most were able to give in to their cravings on occasion and get right back on track.
They also found that those who had strong cravings were actually craving high density foods. Participants who lost more weight actually craved low density foods. What other studies and doctors have labeled carbohydrate craving syndome may actually be calorie addiction.
What does this mean for dieters? It tells us that the number of times we have cravings doesn’t change over time. It is our reaction to the cravings that counts. You can lose weight by choosinglow-fat, low-calorie alternatives that mimic the taste of the food you crave. It also tells us that if we give in to our cravings occasionally, you will feel less deprived on your diet and will be less likely to crash and binge in the long run.
