The Hotel Lungomare, in the lively town of Cesenatico on the Italian Adriatic, makes a special effort to offer cuisine from the Romagna region that's suitable for active cyclists and sports lovers – well, the town’s the start and finish point for the Nove Colli (9 hills) race, a 202km race that attracts thousands of cyclists every May. It’s also a good base for cycle rides in the countryside, along the coast, and up into the Apennine mountains into the regions of Le Marche and Tuscany.
Cesenatico today is a resort that’s probably most famous for its sandy beaches, but in the 16th-century it was better known for its port – designed by Leonardo da Vinci.
The family who own the Hotel Lungomare love cycling and make a special effort to look after cyclists and sporting enthusiasts. The hotel provides a secure bike storeroom, a well-equipped workshop, free cycling guides – and even energy snacks for training. Food is fresh and healthy with lots of local fish – and there’s always a large buffet breakfast with fresh and organic foods to sustain anyone heading off for a cycle ride in the sunshine (or a lazy day by the pool).
Cycle routes are illustrated on plastic-coated pocket maps, and the hotel can arrange bike hire (they’ll have the bike delivered to the hotel) and even a coach, complete with bike trailer, for larger groups.
After a day in the saddle guests can enjoy an Italian buffet, and have a relaxing session with a masseur. Wet sports gear is no problem with washing and drying facilities on offer.
