Welcome to the World - Travel the Globe through the Written Word

Today is my first official day as Feature Writer for World Literature and I can’t wait to get started. There is nothing like curling up with a good book and escaping to far away places and exotic destinations, even if it is only for half an hour.

Try Something New

It is easy to develop a habit of picking up books by familiar authors or in favourite genres. While this is great, like visiting with well-loved friends, it can be exciting to try something new as well.

Just like meeting new people, picking up a book by an unfamiliar or new author isn’t always a positive experience. The great thing about books is that you can easily put aside one that doesn’t suit your tastes and try something different. There is no risk of offending anyone or getting regular messages left on your answering machine from a new acquaintance that doesn’t seem to have realised, as you did not long after you made the mistake of giving them your number, that you just don’t have that much in common. Books rarely become stalkers.

Visit a Local Library

If you want to take some literary risks, the library is the place to go. You can try something new without the worry of having spent your hard earned cash on a book that you won’t enjoy. Librarians are generally only to happy too recommend authors or titles if you find it too intimidating to just pick something off a shelf at random.

Reading books set in different countries, periods of time or cultures offer us a wonderful opportunity to expand our world without leaving our home.
