Our visit to Napier was fantastic. The weather was kind, our accommodation was central and we managed to see and do a lot in the short time we had. The three-hour drive bisected many miles of barren scrubland, culminating in steep climbs and dizzying descents through rugged mountain country until we reached the gentler climes of the east coast where a patchwork of orchards and vineyards is laid out either side of the highway.
My favourite activity was our visit to the Hawke's Bay Farmers Market where delicious meats, cheeses, chocolates, sauces, oils, wines and produce were available for the tasting. My own special treat? A freshly made paua (abalone) fritter on a slice of bread.
It had been many years since I'd visited Napier but I know I won't leave it so long again - come spring I'm certain I'll be venturing into the Hawke's Bay again, this time for a bit longer!
