Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who, if nothing else, is at least less corrupt than his incalculably corrupt predecessor, has promised to set aside 270 million dollars for the Amazon Indians.
Brazil's indigenous population stands at around 730,000 and constitutes less than 0.5% of the total population of that country. The Indians are scattered throughout the Amazon region and belong to more than 200 different ethnic groups that speak 180 different languages.
After the usual diversion of corruption funds are subtracted, much of the money will be used to set the boundaries of 127 indigenous territories, and to help compensate and resettle families of 9,000 rural workers that occupy those lands.
An additional cut from the pie will be used by researchers to create an indigenous dictionary.
