Traumatic Brain Injuries are stealth in nature. Brain injuries often leave no scratches so there is a false sense of security that there was no damage. TBI can occur from a car accident, a fall while skiing, tripping down a flight of stairs, riding a bike into a tree.
Students that return to school after a TBI are no longer the same students as before. I will be writing a series on Traumatic Brain Injuries and how to help students and parents understand what happens to the brain. Most of the information comes from personal experience, meetings, and workshops. It has been very useful to me. I will share some statistics and give strategies for the student, parents and school to use. It is very likely that TBI damage will not go away or heal like a broken arm. So, these strategies may need to be life-long.
