Larger Is Better?

It has been an accepted thought that the smaller the class--the better. Right? Well, an all-boys school in Sidcup, England has shattered that belief.

The head of Kemnal Technology College, John Atkins, found himself with a situation. A math teacher left and he needed to find a solution over the weekend. Since it was impossible to find a teacher on short notice, he combined two classes. He got an excellent teacher, assigned three teaching assistants and wired up two interactive white boards.

Results

  • 9th graders achieved far higher grades than had been predicted
  • 11th graders also exceeded expectations.
  • Half the students earned an A to C grades compared to 22% when classes were smaller.

This leaves us wondering if a quality teacher with assistants is a better formula than small classrooms.
