I was watching some home improvement shows this week, as always, and I was finding myself feeling increasingly annoyed. Over and over, I heard interior decorators and hosts of these shows saying, “why bother paying for high priced art when you can create your own for a fraction of the cost,” or something similar to that.
Okay. While I encourage everyone to pick up a paint brush and experiment with torn paper . . . I do not encourage anyone to degrade the work of artists by saying things with such a negative connotation. What do you think? Do you think homeowners are wasting their interior decorating dollars on original art? Do you think they can create their own work that is equally as appealing and valuable for a fraction of the cost?
It feels degrading to me because artists work hard at their craft and, to those who don’t completely understand the art world or industry, it bothers me when I hear that kind of “anyone can do that, there’s nothing special about that” attitude. Let’s discuss! Blog about it!
