Feeling the Burn!
One thing this month has taught many artists participating in the "art a day challenge" outlined in a previous blog entry (ArtSoMoFo: Day one!) is that time management is a crucial step toward success. Without it, disaster strikes! The month is almost finished and some artists have dropped out, while others have fallen behind with the intension of catching up.
How do artists prevent themselves from dropping out or falling behind on goals and important projects?
TIME MANAGEMENT. When setting goals, it's important to link them specifically to how much time the artist has to complete them in relation to what else is going on in their life. Are lists to light? Are lists too weighty? Are the goals too complex? These questions must be addressed; otherwise frustration and failure will be felt. Neither of which are good for battling issues of artistic block.
Some useful sites to teach artists (and anyone else for that matter) about goal setting and how it relates to time management:
Personal Time Management and Goal Setting GuideEffective Time Management and Goal Setting
Time Management For Goal SettingUse of these resources will keep artists on track when it comes to organizing their goals, setting up a workable schedule and achieving these goals. It's important to invest in a notebook to keep track of lists, a date book to write out each task that needs to be scheduled and a wall calendar to keep track of personal (and professional) deadline. Write out every detail so nothing is overlooked or forgotten. The bottom line: artists should treat their projects with the same respect as work, even if it's just a hobby. This will allow for their peers and colleagues to appreciate the fact that their time is important and respect (and provide support for) what they're trying to accomplish.
