Consignment Shops

A lot of people have been approaching me this past year about selling my work in consignment shops. There are a few sprinkled here and there in my area and slightly beyond and these people cannot figure out why I have not approached them for selling opportunities.

Well, I am really on the fence about this topic. Do I sell my work there? Do I approach galleries? In my research, I have noted that each take about the same commission (with slight variations, of course). I have not been able to tell which are moving mixed media art better in comparison to another, though.

  • What are your thoughts about this subject?
  • Do you feel an artist has a better chance selling their work in a gallery or in a consignment shop?
  • Do you feel there is more traffic in one in comparison to another?

I have set a goal for myself to begin selling work in face-to-face situations. I have had measured success selling my work online, but I feel the need to “get out there” and see what happens. I do not know, however, if this is going to happen this year or in the future. It is a goal I am working toward, though, and I feel the market really needs to be researched before just jumping in blindly.
