Time for Student Resume Work

It's that time of year now, when students who normally spend loads of time perfecting their assignments, but don't bother to spend that same time and effort on their Resumes.

I've been inundated lately with requests to be a reference, or to go over a Resume. Of course I spend the time: helping students succeed means I have succeeded as well. But I shake my head at the lack of priorities or lack of doing their own homework on themselves.

So here's a quick list to help all you recent grads and students get that important business document ready for launch!

Set aside some quiet time to do your Resume - at least a few hours. Yep, you WILL need more time, but this is a start.

Feel free to use any template to create your first Resume - at least you won't have to think of the appropriate section headings or worry right away about what goes where.

As a student, your education is your most important feature - so it should go before your list of Work Experience. As well, I strongly urge you to divide your Experience into two sections: Work related (all those part-time jobs or even full time) and then your School related - read the article Resumes for Students for more information. OR use the information from the Skill Set article as well as Resumes For Students and create a Skills Section. This shows your proven skills from many sources, and does not depend on an actual job list.

Spend some time on getting this right - keep reading and editing your work. Yes, it IS worth it - you'll get the job you really want!
