Finding "Employment" can be hard at any time, but often seems to be more difficult in the summer. For students, the objective is full time employment for the summer, and often hopes of some kind of part-time work to continue during the school year (with hopes of more hours during the holiday season). For most adults, summer employment is almost non-existant - as most are looking for full time year round work - and interviews/job searching for new employees takes place before and after summer. Those working full time look to summer as their vacation, and often put off interviewing until the end of the summer (even though the job posts before the summer). Often this is an offshoot of the process - by the time the request for an employee is granted by Human Resources, the timeline for screening and final interviews has lengthened.
This does not mean you cannot find a job in the summer - just that you might have to be patient. Don't be afraid to ask about the potential company's timeline for the advertised position, and say you do understand that during the summer the whole process is often delayed due to vacationing employees who booked their vacation long before the job was posted.
Use this "down-time" to update all your business documents as pertaining to your career; consider an update on training and what will be available in the Fall/Winter; and take time to update yourself - go swimming, get into an exercise routine, upgrade your mind by reading - even if it is summer reading by the pool!
Summertime IS too short for most of us (in the Northern Hemisphere) not to take time to enjoy it! And the more relaxed we are, the more confident we appear, and the more likely we'll get that job we want!
