I am always amazed at how our society often judges people based on what they do for a living. And how parents perpetuate that same judgement. How often have you heard, or told your own kids - "do you want to work at McDonald's™ all your life?" Well, honestly - what is wrong with that? Not classy enough? It is the Food service industry - and the potential is there to work in a managerial position. You do get some extra perks (a certain amount of food per shift is free, and many allow you to buy your own food anytime at a reduced price) and you do learn a lot about Customer Service - that buzz word that just won't go away in the working world!
Yes, I was guilty of using this example to my own kids - in a reverse sort of way. When they had a bad time with certain other students due to their improved study habits or marks, I'd tell them to remember these other kids would probably spend their life at McDonald's™ saying "do you want fries with that". And then it finally hit me - I was NOT doing my kids any favours with this reverse type of put-down - and was doing a disservice to all those working in the Food service Industry.
No, it is not a glamourous job, and many jobs are not - but that doesn't mean it is not the job for you. And it may not make you ecstatic, but it is a stepping stone - and it has its own ladder you can climb.
