End of House & Garden Magazine

If you're a fan of House & Garden magazine and the website, www.houseandgarden.com, then you're going to feel a little lost for a while. Charles Townsend, President and CEO of Conde Nast Publications, has announced that the December 2007 issue of the magazine will be its last and the website will cease functioning soon after.

The decision appears to have been made after an abrupt departure by the publication's publisher, which caused the executive staff to reconsider the viability of Home & Garden. In the end the decision was made to axe the magazine and focus their attentions elsewhere.

Editor, Dominique Browning, has posted a farewell message on the magazine's website and notes that a January issue has been produced, which does make the decision to stop seem incredibly abrupt.

Conde Nast still has several magazines that fall into the home interior and gardening categories including Architectural Digest, Domino, and Vogue Living. And the big news for those fans of Vogue Living is that they'll be publishing more issues next year.

I know that I'll miss this publication (especially the website) and I wish the staff the best of luck.

After searching through out the web, I just came across this information from you Kirstin which has been helpful. I had gotten my folks a 4-year subscription to House & Garden with their first issue starting in September 2005, and it was to end with the September 2009 issue. They had not received an issue "in years" when we were talking about it, and I started to put the puzzle pieces together, that the magazine had ceased publication but didn't know with what issue. Your article provided some help, but what is VERY frustrating is that a refund was never given for the issues that were paid for. Since their subscription was good until the September 2009 issue, and it ceased publication with the December 2007, there is nearly two years of issues that should be refunded. I have noticed this with other magazines as well such as Electronic Gaming Monthly, they ceased publication and never notified those who had subscriptions because money was owed to them for undelivered issues. It is quite unfortunate that there are probably countless number of people who subscribed to House & Garden and were not issued refunds on their remaining balance of the subscriptions they paid for. I plan on contacting Conde Nast Publications and asking them WHY refunds were not issued.
