Half your weight in Water

Water, water everywhere... We've been told by every health professional from doctors and nurses, to naturopaths and energy healers: water makes everything in your body work better. Drinking enough water can assist in balancing every organ and system in your body, from the immune system and the endocrine and digestive systems to assisting with the health of your kidneys, liver, colon, skin, memory, energy levels, weight loss and more.

Unfortunately, there are too many guidelines about how much water you need. Eight glasses a day? How many ounces are there in a glass - 8, 12, or 10? Says who?

I've got a new guideline that may be helpful to those of you looking to stay hydrated and keep your body strong and young. It requires a bit of math... but it's easy math.

Start by taking your body weight in pounds (no, you don't have to tell anyone).

Divide that number by two.

Presto! That's how many ounces of water you need to drink in a day, at a minimum.

(e.g. If you weigh 150 lbs. ---> 150 / 2 = 75 ounces per day)

Well, how much is that? I can guesstimate a cup by eye, but ounces are a little trickier.

An easy way to eyeball it is this. The average water glass is about 8 ounces when it's almost full. Take your ounces per day and divide by 8 (or 10, if 8 is too stressful). That's how many glasses of water your body needs on a relaxing day.

(e.g. 75 ounces / 8 = a little over 9 glasses of water per day)

If you drink coffee, tea, or other sugared or caffeinated beverages, add another 8-ounce glass to your water requirement for every cup of coffee, tea, coke, etc. that you drink.

Didn't I say it was easy?

The hard part is figuring out how to tote all that water around and remembering to drink it. I keep a bottle or a glass of water beside my computer, my work table, even near my bed, so I'm sipping all day, whether I feel thirsty or not - if you feel thirsty, it means you're already slightly dehydrated.

Coffee, black or green tea, and sugary juices (whether they're natural or not) do not count towards your water needs. If you're seeking variety, however, herbal teas and rice, soy, or nut milks can be a good option that will count as water to your body.

Water is needed for virtually every body function. Without adequate water, metabolism is slower, the immune system is weakened, and every process that your body carries out happens more slowly. So yes, weight loss can be significantly hindered if you're not drinking enough water. By the same token, drinking more water can help you lose weight.

I have been drinking a gallon a day but the past 2 weeks i cut it down to half because it was a distraction at work having me go to the bathroom often. Well after cutting my water i have been feeling a bit dry in my throat and now i am sick! and i regret dropping my water intake!

But i have been told by a teacher of mine that say that taking in too much water can cause future kidney problems and failures.

how much is too much?

I live in vegas and it is a desert...literaly. So weather you think you're dehydrated or not you most likely are. I heard bout' a servey that said only like 19% of the american population drink the correct ammount of water they are supposed to. Well i try to drink water, seeing that I am overweight I am starting to drink more. Plus I have P.E. in school and I sweat a lot (so doesn't everyone else hehe.) so I try to get 6 glases in a day.

Great information! If you're overweight, you should stick to the guidelines suggested above: 1/2 your body weight in water. When that amount is done (for the day), then drink regular 8oz glasses as needed, particularly when active and/or dry, hot and humid days.

For Europeans that use the metric system, just take your body weight in KG and divide it by 30. This will give you the number of liters you need per day.

I weigh 85kg so I need 2.8 liters of water per day.

Not drinking enough water can definitely SLOW weight loss ... plus, being dehydrated can make you feel sluggish, tired and even be the underlying cause of unrecognized irritation, anxiety, low moods and headaches in your day.
Once you begin experiencing life with enough water, you will shed water weight, feel better, think more clearly and even find your skin is better conditioned. In the long run, drinking enough water is one of the secrets to healthy living. Plenty of water does so many wonderful things for our bodies.
I began drinking 1/2 my weight in water (for weight loss) and was amazed how much better I felt and the beautiful improvement in my skin. It's worth the effort!
