Snowbirds come from mostly northern states, Canada and other foreign countries to winter in the south. They are usually retirees and range in age from their late 60's to 90's.
Most don't "wing it" down. Most drive. In the biggest RV's, SUV’s or minivans - ever manufactured. Smaller cars are occasionally spotted - but the Goliaths of the motor world appear to be winning!
I live in a very popular gathering spots for snowbirds - the Gulf Coast of Florida. From November to May a plentitude of non-Floridian license plated cars, and their drivers, can cause havoc.
Unlike other year-rounders who sport the local favorite bumper sticker:
IF THEY ARE SNOWBIRDS AND THEY HAVE A SEASON - WHY CAN'T WE SHOOT THEM?"
I believe harmony can be achieved. So in the spirit of unity I offer the following advice:
SNOWBIRDS
Please do not cut across three lanes of traffic, drive 20 mph in the 55 mph left passing lane or pivot your head like in the "Exorcist" trying to see all the new things in the neighborhood .
YEAR-ROUNDERS
If you see a snowbird lost - help them with directions. Sending them into unfinished housing developments and out to the orange groves - not nice!
SNOWBIRDS
Please don't get pushy at the banks, libraries, restaurants and stores etc.
I can attest the Florida Welcome Centers give out free samples of citrus juice not
"I am more important than you" cards.
YEAR-ROUNDERS
Allow extra time. It’s season. Everything requires more time so bite the bullet and JUST DO IT!
SNOWBIRDS
Don’t complain about the weather! Its Mother Nature's call, and we know she can be one mean witch! Hurricane season starts in May.
YEAR -ROUNDERS
Stop talking about the hurricanes! Yes, we got dented and bruised but we survived them - move on!
SNOWBIRDS
Please!!!! Showing off your aged, lily- white, untanned skin at the beach, pool or at home is fine. Showing it off in anywhere else and spilling out or short shorts, halters, tube tops and muscle t-shirts is just gross!
I'm far from being a rail thin raving beauty but I've learned - leaving some of the mystery, or misery, hidden is a good thing.
YEAR -ROUNDERS
Discover your own lanai, patio and the beauty of take out.
Remember summer? When the high humidity has you checking your feet to make sure they are not webbed. Enjoy the outdoors. Bring home a pizza, Chinese or BBQ and remind yourself why you moved to Florida.
Now everyone gather tight for a group hug!
