Give Thanks

This Thursday is Thanksgiving in the USA. Once a proud holiday all on its own, its prominence has been steadily ebbed away by Halloween and Christmas.

Not to say Thanksgiving is still not a part of four busiest travel days in the States, or the national consumption of traditional dishes like turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie have slackened off or football viewership has taken a nosedive. No. The true reason behind the holiday that of having one national day of thanks, has seemingly disappeared like butter on a hot roll.

I am not opposed to merchants making money. The avalanche of Halloween with ghoulish abandon does not upset me. Nor do the 24/7 hours some malls and shops will be operating during the next few weeks. Capitalism rules - I accept that.

But to be honest – being in the presence of carolers, candy canes and Mr. Claus himself before the cornucopia of plenty has been laid out upsets me a bit.

So I ask everyone on Thursday, American or not, take a moment and give thanks.

Whether your blessings are large, small or even seemingly non-existent – give thanks.

I guarantee your day will be better.
