If you'll be in New York City in August, make a trip to the Lower East Side to enjoy the 13th Annual Charlie Parker Birthday Festival. This month long celebration of the jazz great's legacy-from August 3 until the 31-features an art exhibition of local and international artists, a block party with live jazz, a poetry reading, a book signing, a concert with Billy Bang, and much more.
The annual festival is presented by A Gathering of the Tribes-a group that produces a literary and cultural magazine, art exhibits, poetry books and readings, music, and other arts related events.
The August-long art exhibit opens on August 3 with music by The Richard Clements Quartet. August 12, will feature evening poetry readings ending with a Billy Bang performance.
On the evening of August 27 meet renowned author Ishmael Reed and prize-winning poet Victor Hernandez Cruz when A Gathering of the Tribes will have a book release party for them.
Most of the events will take place in or around the neighborhood of 285 East 3rd Street in Manhattan.
