Winter Reading Seed Catalogs

I have been going through my seed catalogs. I have a huge stack from last year and a few new ones for the coming season. I am seeing quite a few seeds which have always been available marked as 'out of stock'.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the global economy being what it is at present and further wonder if heirlooms from these catalogs are going to become harder to find. I hope not. For all the seed savers out there, hang on to a good supply for your families because they may become even more important than ever.

Open pollinated heirloom seeds make sense in so many ways. I can't imagine ever growing anything else. I've made my short list already and will be ordering early to make certain I have them in stock for planting in the spring and fall of '09. Have you made your lists yet? Did you save seeds this year?

I absolutely love the catalogs from Bountiful Gardens, Heirloom Acres Seeds, D. Landreth Seed Company, Baker Creek, Victory Seed Company and Heirloomseeds.com just to name a few.

I admit, it is an addiction. Heirloom seeds, that is. I would like to have them all so that I might pass them around to everyone I meet. Farmers and apartment dwellers alike. Everyone can grow a portion of the food they feed their own families. Whether it be on several acres or in pots on patios.

We'll talk more about heirloom seeds as winter sets in and we have more time to relax, flip through those catalogs and talk.
