Can Massage Harm?

The government typically regulates a profession in order to protect the public from harm. Dentists, doctors, physiotherapists, and some massage therapists are regulated by a larger governmental structure. There is much controversy over the issue of whether massage therapy should be one of these regulated professions. Currently, in British Columbia, massage therapy is regulated, but only include those therapists who have a minimum of 3000 hours of training. What happens to everyone else becomes an issue as there are many different types of massage practitioners who require or have very little training. In B.C., these practitioners are restricted from using the titles of Massage Therapy, Registered Massage Therapist or Massage Practitioner.
