Make your own Pool Toys

Toddler time is all about fun and bright colors and activity. For parents its about trying to prepare them for schooling. This is a great way to combine the two. Make your own pool toys that are educational tools for learning colors and letters.

Materials Needed:

  • 2 package of 8 ½ X 11 foam sheeting
  • 4 packages of 8 ½ X 11 foam sheeting with adhesive backing
  • Scissors
  • Exacto
  • Pencil
  • Ruler (optional)

The first part of this project is also the most fun. You are essentially going to sandwich a sheet of foam between two adhesive backed sheets. The first part of this process is to decide which colors to put together. Since the foam sheets come in a wide range of bright colors you can really get some sharp contrasts. After you have selected which colors you want together peel the backing and stick a foam sheets on each side the non-adhesive sheet.

Using your pencil (and ruler if you choose), draw a letter on each composite making it as large as possible to fill the space. Using the scissors and exacto, cut out the letters. It’s that easy.

You now have a set of pool toys that will help you make learning letters and colors fun.

As your child grows you can make ones with shapes and numbers. When summer is over the letters will still be usable inside. They can be used dry or in the bath. As your child begins to learn spelling, you can use the letters for floor games to encourage them. Anything that will encourage literacy in our children is a great thing. And of course have fun.
