One way I get ideas is to go through the crafting sale paper. I wanted an idea that would be appropriate for all of the kids, big and small. Then I hit on this idea. What about making a family logo and making it into a shirt for each family member?
I started by sketching out ideas and without telling them what I am making, asking other family members for input. I guess they are used to me because no one asked. I wanted something that was representative of our specific family and what gives us joy.
After getting the drawing exactly how I wanted it, I scanned it into the computer. If you zoom in on a drawn object on the computer, you can see hundreds of flaws. This is the time to alter it. Using your tools, outline and color the logo to your taste. Keep in mind what color the background will be as you do this. If you are using light colored backgrounds, you can get away with a lot more.
You can then use the fonts to add a title or family name.
I went to the local craft store and got the photo transfer to iron on that is washable. They happened to have t-shirts on sale. I picked out a color and appropriate size for each family member. Then following the manufacturers directions made each person in our family a t-shirt. Everyone contributed ideas so they understand the meaning behind the idea even if they didn't while it was in process.
If you have a new baby in the family you can make ones that say something to the effect that you all work for the baby. Each year you can make a different one honoring some event that happened that year.
