Clown Hat

In the last blog we worked on making a ruffled collar for a dog to have a clown costume. In this blog we will focus on making the hat.

Materials Needed:

  • Broadcloth-1/2 yard (you can use 1/4 yard for a small dog)
  • Posterboard
  • Elastic
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Hot Glue Gun and Sticks
  • Needle and Thread
  • 3 pom poms-size depends on the size of the dog

Cut about a 16" square from the posterboard. Curl it in at one end like making an ice cream cone. Tape it in place and trim off the bottom so it is even. Try it on your dog. Now is the time to adjust it. Move the tape in or out depending on the size of your dog. Tape the posterboard when it is just right. Mark the edge that overlaps with your pencil. Now cut on the line you marked. This is your pattern. Lay your pattern on the fabric and cut it out leaving a 1/4 " seam allowance on the sides that will meet.

Hot glue the fabric into the cone shape. You can retape the posterboard and use it to stiffen the inside or use it with just fabric. Put it on the dog and mark where the elastic should go. Measure also how long the elastic should be to be secure but comfortable. Cut the piece of elastic and sew it to the inside of the hat on each side with the seam in the back. Hot glue the pom poms down the front of the hat spaced evenly.
