If you know where they bought it and have the receipt you can return it. What if you don't have the receipt or even know where they bought it? We have spent years giving away items, yardsaling them and in recent years there is always eBay. What about trying something new? Try looking at the unwanted gift as the beginning of a craft project. It works and stimulates your creativity. That ugly picture for the wall can be primed to use as a canvas for my own painting or that wool sweater that's two sizes too large would be great for felting wool. Don't be so quick to throw away, give away or sell. You might just be getting rid of a treasure.

Try this one if you need a gift in a hurry or want to liven up your own candles.

Materials needed:

  • super glue
  • copper wire
  • 6-12 beads in a variety of sizes
  • pillar candle

Bend the end of a 16" length of wire about a half an inch. Beginning on the other end, add the beads to the wire.

The half inch that you bent get poked into the candle at the base. Super-glue it in place. You are now going to wind the wire around the candle leaving a bead or two here and there as you wind. When you get to the top edge, cut the wire to give you a half inch to poke into the candle. Glue into place.

Try curling the wire in spots or adding charms here and there. Make them very personal to the recipient by what color and embellishments you choose.

Most of all, just have fun.

When people are opening packages this year, keep in mind that you can cut any paper into a 12" x 12" square and use it for scrapbooking. Especially when it comes to the special moments.

  • The paper from the very first Christmas present for the new baby.
  • The gift from the man or woman in your life.
  • The first gift your child gives to you.
  • The first gift your grandchild gives you herself.
  • The first gifts exchanged as man and wife.

Use the paper as a backdrop for scrapbooking that moment or the person who gave it to you.

This doesn't have to be only for Christmas. You can do the same thing for birthdays, Mother's and Father's day, anniversaries, weddings, etc.

Make sure to at least make a footnote somewhere on the page to note where the paper came from. Over time, you will never remember.

Happy Holidays from Crafts!
