Collages are fun to do, why not use them in therapy?
Collages are useful therapy tools to help the artist/client connect with all of their spheres. The use of pictures and words and phrases can help the artist step back and reflect upon the messages revealed. When a therapist is involved a collage can offer the therapist insights into the client's world which can move therapy ahead more quickly than if just talking sessions were used.
Whether or not a collage is specifically designed for therapy or not, just doing one is relaxing. Creating a method of relaxation is in itself a beneficial coping technique.
I was trying to find a collage specifically focused upon eating disorders, but, unfortunately, could not find one that wasn't copywrited in some fashion. If anyone has done a collage in relation to their eating disorder and would like to donate it, I would appreciate it. Of course credit would go to you.
Because I used all of my word allowance for the article, it is important to write on the back of your collage what the collage is about. As you reflect back on it and them (if you make a series of them), leave room to write down insights.
If you keep a scrapbook of them, this will truly be beneficial as well. You will be able to glimpse at the whole person a facet at a time, and yet, all at once. There will be a sense of accomplishment and growth.
I would love to publish some of them here on the blog, if possible. They may help someone else. :)
