Canadian Writers festivals

Every year, thousands of book-lovers meet best-selling authors at book readings, seminars and literary luncheons where popular novelists gather to talk about their craft.

Here are a few literary festivals worth checking out ...

The Ottawa International Writers Festival

  • Where: Ottawa, Ontario.
  • When: October 1 to 7, 2006.
  • What: Storytellers, poets, and novelists gather in the nation's capital for book readings, presentations, and literary luncheons.
  • Past events have featured novelists Madeleine Thien ("Certainty,") Josephine Cox ("Journey's End,") Susan Glickman ("The Violin Lover,") and Linda Holeman ("The Moonlit Cage.")

    WordFest

  • Where: Various locations throughout Banff and Calgary, Alberta.
  • When: October 10 to 15, 2006.
  • What: The Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival, "WordFest," is an annual celebration of the written and spoken word.
  • Australian novelist Kate Grenville ("Lilian's Story," "The Idea of Perfection,") is scheduled to appear at this year's WordFest.

    The Vancouver International Writers and Readers Festival

  • Where: Granville Island, British Columbia.
  • When: October 17 to 22, 2006.
  • What: Six days of book readings, literary discussions, and book signings. This event welcomes celebrated authors, as well as book-lovers of all ages.
  • This year the festival welcomes short-story writer Caroline Adderson ("Bad Imaginings,") author Stephanie Johnson ("Desperate Sisters,") and novelist Anita Rau Badami ("Tamarind Woman.")

    The International Festival of Authors

  • Where: Toronto, Ontario.
  • When: October 18 to 28, 2006.
  • What: A popular programme featuring book readings, signings and presentations by over eighty authors from fifteen countries.
  • Canadian author Margaret Atwood ("Oryx and Crake") and celebrated writer Nell Freudenberger ("Lucky Girls") will be at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre for this year's festival.
