The U.S. Government recently published a report about Reading at Risk. Once again, we are bombarded with statistics about a country where fewer and fewer people take the time to read. Read literature, that is. If you are reading this, your reading habits are probably not at risk. If your reading is not at risk, then I have good news for you.
The study discovered that reading effects life-style in a positive way. And the effects are not just intellectual and emotional they are physical too. People who read are more active than those who don’t. You are more likely to participate in sports, work as a volunteer, or be involved in a cultural event. The reader is more likely to attend a performing arts event, visit a museum, do charity work, or workout.
I don’t know about you but I find all the encouragement I need to read more when I read that little nugget of information.
The report, Reading at Risk, can be downloaded and read at your own leisure. If you google the topic there are some humorous and some scary discussions regarding the report that might entertain you. As for me, I think I will go to the park, grab a seat in the shade, and read that Jane Hamilton book I bought a while back.
