The Essentials for Bookshelves

If you own a lot of books, you will need bookshelves. If we (the bright and brilliant book lovers of the world), were all rich, we would have a team of decorators and architects design our dream library. But if you are like me, money is far from being a huge part of your life (not to mention the space necessary to have a room dedicated to being a library). Therefore, bookshelves are a necessity. Here is what you need to know.

• A linear foot of shelving will hold 8-12 average sized hardcover books.
• To prevent shelves from sagging, there should be no more than forty inches between supports.
• A long expanse of wall is ideal for resting the bookcase against.
• Bookshelves should not be placed too near the heater or air conditioner vents.
• Do not place shelves where the books will be exposed to direct sunlight. The UV in sunlight will fade the colors and weaken the binding.
• Glass-fronted bookshelves are a necessity if you collect rare or fragile books.
• Always dust your books. Ideally books should be dusted regularly. A vacuum cleaner on low with a soft bristle attachment is good for quick and easy dusting.
• Provide a chair, a table, and a light next to your bookshelves to create a small reading station or nook.
• Lighting is important. Comfortable lighting for you book displays and book nook are worthwhile projects.

When you decide that the piles have to find a new home, remember not all bookshelves are the same. Remember that where you put your shelves and all those volumes you’ve spent precious time and money to purchase is important. Make them convenient and comfortable to use. Finally, keep your collection clean. Why bother collecting if you let the collection gather dust?
