It is a quandary that all serious readers face. Do we pay attention to popular culture’s assessment of what good literature is? The answer might be that we ought to be aware but not take it too seriously. So where does Oprah Winfrey’s wildly successful book club fall in this? I think it falls into the category of what we need to be aware as serious readers. In fact, we might even want to occasionally read a book off her list. Her impact on popular culture is immense and many of her book choices are noteworthy. One wonders who directs the decisions, but perhaps that does not matter. What matters is that people listen.
Why not pop over to Oprah's Book Club and check out what the mainstream is reading thanks to a cultural icon.
