A 37-year-old woman from Miami went into a day spa on Sept 25 for a liposuction procedure. She was given a 30 mg dose of propofol for sedation prior to the procedure. She suffered seizures, then cardiac arrest and was on life support until her death yesterday.
Obvious comparisons to the death of Michael Jackson are being made. This lady received a fairly low dose of propofol which has a relatively good safety profile. It's used often for sedation during gastrointestinal procedures. Questions will need to be answered regarding administration of the drug in the day spa setting was appropriate. Certainly, Michael Jackson's home use was not.
The medical examiner's final toxicology report is still pending. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
