My teenage daughter Sarah announced the other day that she was going up to her room to 'unplug.' I love the concept of unplugging, and was proud to see she recognizing that its something you have to MAKE yourself do. No phone, no ipod, no computer- just blissful peace.
It turns our her 'unplugging' routine is quite elaborate- she (for the first time) invited me to attend. Sarah is a vegetarian, a supporter of the efforts to Save Darfur, and an award-winning global warming science project creator. A modern-day teen hippie, if you will.
So, her moment of Zen consists of unplugging all electrical outlets (including the air conditioner- ugh, it was hot in there), lighting some candles and some incense, listening to Bob Marley (on her laptop's battery power, natch), and writing in her journal. It was a quite amazing, peaceful set-up. Unfortunately her two-year-old brother was still awake upon my visit (his comment: "Spooky.") so next time I think I'll stop by alone, bring a journal (and some ice water!) and hang out longer.
I have to say, it was a proud motherhood moment- seeing that she had already learned that in the world, creating a special place of solace for yourself is key.
We could all use to unplug and 'get off the grid' sometimes- especially teens!
