Summer Trips - Shorter?

I just cancelled a trip from Florida to Chicago to see family. Part of the reason is cost, part is time, and part is my daughter in Mississippi has a brand new baby and a Navy Seabee husband about to deploy overseas for six months.

With relief, I chose to go to Mississippi for a couple of weeks. Don't mond telling you the cost of gas is intimidating to me. My vehicle gets fair milage, but nonetheless, budget is a concern when you're travelling.

Florida gets pretty warm in the summer (spelled oh-my-gosh-I'm-stifling). It's the heat - not dry heat, just soggy, sweaty, heat. So we're apt to do a little travelling in summer, and, of course, so are most people.

If you browse the Web, you'll find a plethora - ok, a whole bunch - of expert opinions on how to stay sane while making plans for the summer. First, of course, you'll want to read my piece on Branson, MO, smack in the middle of the country, more or less, and accessible. (click Articles on the left navigation bar.) Branson is also fun.

Before you drop something resembling the national debt on travel costs, think about keeping your vacation closer to home and a little simpler than other years or combine travel with learning.

Contact your state's visitor's bureau - they all have beautiful publications to help you figure out what your homeground has to offer.

Rent a place in the biggest city nearest you and explore on foot, by bus, or by cab. Amazing what you'll discover. Chambers of Commerce can start you out in a direction that appeals to you.

Here are some places you can find advice - you decide if it's good advice or bad advice.
