Job Market for Seniors Breaking News

From the Washington Post, July 2, by Jeffrey G. Ghassemi:

Layoffs hazardous to older workers

Getting the boot late in your career may be especially bad for your health, according to research published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

In the study, based on a nationally representative survey involving more than 12,500 participants from nearly 8,000 households, those who lost jobs at age 50 or older were more than twice as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke as younger job losers.

The stress associated with late-career job loss appeared tied to adverse health outcomes, even after considering other risk factors.

From the Warrnambool Standard:

OLDER workers in rural areas are being forced out of their jobs under the new industrial relations laws, Victorian Workplace Rights Advocate Tony Lawrence has warned.

He held a seminar in Warrnambool yesterday and will hold another in Portland today.

``Particularly in rural areas we are seeing a pattern where older workers are being forced out,' he said. ``Someone in a company of less than 100 can be sacked just because they changed the colour of their hair.

``There's uneven bargaining power in rural areas where you've got a lesser number of employees and employers have more bargaining power."

From Business Week:

Older workers surveyed valued jobs that would provide a useful service and cash compensation. Only a third were thinking entrepreneurial futures, and many thought flexibility a most important job attribute.
