IndiePublic.com, an interesting new addition to the social networking world has recently been launched. This site will be of interest to sewers and needlecrafters of all descriptions, as the aim of the site is to provide a hub for independent crafters. Giving an online environment where information can be shared, work shown and general interaction and communication with like-minded people.
Members of the site are able to upload pictures and videos of their work, join groups with other members and participate in discussions. There is also a blog facility. Members are encouraged to showcase their work to other crafters and perhaps to potential buyers. There are groups already running for people with an interest in fabric and, of course, for etsy.com sellers. More groups will get set up as the site develops.
Being set up specifically for crafters, including sewing and needlecrafting, the site offers many specific facilities not found on other social networking sites. It is also likely to attract a targeted membership. One of the aims of the site is to put potential buyers of hand crafter goods in touch with designer / makers.
Sewing and needlecraft is often a solitary activity. Whilst popping a pair of knitting needles into a bag and joining others in a coffee shop or bar is an excellent way to meet other people, unfortunately lugging a full sized quilt, sewing machine and necessary accessories into a bar just isn’t going to work! An online community such as IndiePublic.com could be an excellent facility for needlecrafters to meet and network. It will be interesting to see how it develops.
