Words from the Ancients: Dinosaurs

Brachiosaurus - From the Greek brachion, "arm", and sauros, "lizard". The name refers to the long neck that characterized this plant-eating reptile.

Pachycephalosaurus - From the Greek pakhys, "thick", kephale, "head", and sauros, "lizard". This large reptile was known for its thick "helmet" head, which it used as a weapon.

Pterdactyl - From the Greek pteron, "feather or wing", and daktylos, "finger". Pterydactyls were a group of flying reptiles.

Triceratops - From the Greek treis, "three", keras, "horn", and ops, "face". The triceratops, one of the most well-known of all the dinosaurs, is characterized by having three horns on its face and head.

Tyrannosaurus Rex - From the Greek tyrannos, "tyrant", sauros, "lizard", and from the Latin rex, "king". This fierce meat-eating dinosaur is widely thought of as the king of all dinos.
