Size 00 and Subzero

Two companies have recently unrolled their sizes below 0. Nicole Miller offers the size “subzero” and Banana Republic offers “00.” The subzero reportedly outfits women with a 23.5-inch waist and 35-inch hips. What exciting news (can you feel my sarcasm dripping from the screen?)…

Probably in an attempt to make women feel better about themselves by offering us clothing that is larger than what the size says, they are actually distorting women’s body image even more.

What’s next, minus sizes? How can you be minus a size unless you’re dead?

I know this was posted a long time ago, but I just read it :) Know that this size 00 business has been a Godsend for me and many, many women like me. This sizing is meant to provide clothing for naturally petite women...they're usually for women 5'4 and under. I eat healthy, even indulge in sweets a lot, and excercise a few times a week, so I have no eating disorder. Still all my life it's been impossible to find adult and professional clothing that fits...until they started making 00. It was frustrating to only find jeans that had butterflies on it, and expensive to have business pants tailored. Please realize that this is something a lot of normal healthy women struggle with, and size 00 has been good for these women.

I am 30 years old, 4'10 and 85 lbs. I do not starve myself and would give anything to be a "regular" size. I recently got a job at a hospital, in which I will have to dress professionally. Ann Taylor carries size 00, however, it's still too big! I don't even have hips to hold them up. I'm basically built like a 12 year old boy! I hate the fact that I have to spend 60-90 dollars on a pair of pants and then an additional 30 dollars, average to get them taken in (hips, length, and even zipper realigned). If only more stores carried a 00, then maybe some stores would run smaller and I would have hope. I refuse to shop at places such as Wet Seal. I recently went in there, knowing they had 00 and they were pleather and another pair was shiny purple glittery pants.
It angers me that I am looking online seeing if anybody else has this problem and they are being criticized saying they are anorexic and stores will not ever carry 00's due to the fact that it will make people think they should be that size. That is ridiculous!

For me (and I was definitely in a sarcastic mood when I wrote the above post!), it's about people feeling good about themsevles, whether they're on the larger or smaller size of the spectrum. I realize there are naturally petite women, as there are naturally curvy women. So why can't the design industry standardize sizes so that ALL sizes are incorporated, instead of individuals- like those who have posted their comments- don't have to go into stores and not be able to find anything that fits? We all come in so many shapes and sizes and I don't expect a designer to be able to fit EVERYBODY, but there should be a large enough coverage of sizes that offer both petite and curvy women the same amount of choices? And wouldn't that be good for business, as there will be many more buyers if there are a larger variety of sizes?

I am frustrated by people talking about people that are a size zero or double zero. My measurements are exactly 33-24-35. I am 5'1 and I will be 30 next week. I have a professional job with a non-profit and I am a pastor's wife and the mother of two children. Trying to find adult clothes that fit is difficult. I do not diet or starve myself. I weigh 104 lbs. with is ok for my small frame. Very few companies carry the size and the ones that do are very high priced.I try to find sales and clearance. I also spend a fortune in alterations. 20 years ago, I would have been a size 2 or 4 but because designers keep changing the cuts because people keep getting bigger, I have to hunt... I recognize that it is rare, but people my size do exist and we need clothes too.

And what about those of us with medical problems, who lose weight, weigh about 95 lbs. and still need clothes that fit so we can go to work? It's very depressing to say the least.
