In a December 25, 2008 Bloomberg article Holiday Sales in U.S. Fell as Much as 4%, SpendingPulse Says, writer Heather Burkenoted thatStandard & Poor’s 500 Retailing Index lost 34% value this year while Walmart (which is not included in the index) gained 17% in the same period.

The actual scene at Walmart backs up this finding; the stores are super-crowded and the checkout lines are long. The likely reason? Individuals and families are strapped for cash, some living paycheck to paycheck, and the world’s largest retailer delivers low prices and price match guarantees. Why should the after Christmas sale be any different? Find out about Walmart's after Christmas deals for 2008: After Christmas Sales - Walmart plus Stein Mart, The Home Depot, Sears, Dick's Sporting Goods, Macy's, Bed Bath & Beyond, hhgregg, and Toys-R-Us Walmart After Christmas Sales 2008 Learn how to use day after Christmas sales to your advantage: Save Money at After Christmas Sales

Participating in the Nick.com Big Green Help is an easy way for kids to learn about the environment. Nickelodeon has made saving the environment easy and fun. First, Nick boiled down environmental principles into specific actions ("green actions") kids can take to make an immediate impact on the environment. Then, the company unveiled a new interactive Global Challenge video game that lets kids use their favorite Nicktoons to battle evil "CO2 monsters."

There seems to be many ways to get to the Big Green Help. A direct link to the challenge is in this article: The Nick.com Big Green Help Global Challenge. Another way to get there is to type in biggreenhelp.com in your web browser.

Two other articles discuss aspects of the Big Green Help:

Do you have a draft resume that contains all of the right information, but is not completely pleasing to the eye? If so, all you may need to do to go from a good resume to a great one is a few formatting tricks. Resume writers use them all the time. The difference between getting an interview and landing in the reject pile sometimes comes down to how easy your resume is to read.

Does your resume only slightly exceed one page? If so, consider playing around with font sizes and margins to make it fit to one page.

Does the important information stand out on your resume? If not, consider utilizing text effects like bolding and italicizing to enhance certain aspects. If the name of your former employer is important, put it in bold. If your current job title is impressive, try italicizing it. Use these text effects together for even more impact, but don't overdo it. Too many text effects can make everything stand out, which is no better than doing nothing in the first place.

For more details on these and other resume writing tips, see the article "How to Format a Resume," which discusses this topic in depth.

Need more than just simple formatting tips? Then the article "Simple Resume Writing Tips" may help. It covers when and how to put the most important information first, how to write succinct statements, and where to find a list of action words to use in job descriptions.

For a limited time, Snapfish is offering free photo books to Oprah viewers. The free photo books are 20 pages, sized 8.5" x 11." The coupon must be redeemed (i.e. the process must begin) on or before November 14, 2008, and the phote book must be ordered on or before Sunday, November 16, 2008.

I just ordered one, and it works! You will have to pay shipping (standard is $6.99) plus tax, but that's a steal for a 20-page photo book. If you have never created a photo book through Snapfish before, I suggest setting aside at least an hour. Although the process makes sense once you're used to it, it's not very intuitive at first.
